Reflection

The past year has seen a lot of change in the world.  And I haven’t kept up with much of it.  Oh, well.  Can’t win ‘em all, can ya?  What I do hope for the coming year is that I read more, and tell you all about what I read.  To that end, I’m setting a reading goal for 2012: 24 books.  That’s a book every two weeks.

Here’s the line up for the first quarter of the year:

  1. The Subtle Knife by Phillip Pullman
  2. The Amber Spyglass by Phillip Pullman
  3. A Storm Hits Valparaiso by David Gaughran
  4. Dawntheif by James Barclay
  5. Shadow’s Lure by Jon Sprunk
  6. 1491 by Charles C. Mann

We’ll see how well I keep to my new schedule.  If you would like to read along and discuss the books as I post my reviews, please do!  Or, feel free to suggest books for the list.  Thanks for reading, and have a Happy New Year.

Death of a blog

Hello all my faithful readers!

I’ve had a recent life changing event occur in my life – I got a job.  (gasps of horror!)  Yes, indeed, I have a job.  A real, bona fide job.  In Santa Rosa, California to be exact.  I’m still making maps and doing some groundbreaking spatial analysis, but now in the world of geothermal energy rather than in wildland fire management.  It’s actually pretty exciting.  But, it has rocked my world.

Not only has it thrown me for a loop, it requires a huge move for my entire family.  Of course, my family only consists of myself, my husband and our dog, but still.  In the past 16 years, we’ve built a huge life for ourselves in the Sierra Nevada mountains – and that’s all changing.

Is this a good thing?  I’m not sure yet, but what I do know is that it means if I really want to stick with this writing thing, I need to focus.  I’ve created two other blogs that I will be managing that deal exclusively with my writing and a writing project I hold very close to my heart.  The first is Nila E. White and the second is Lorena Libre Mystery Tales.

This all means that I will abandon this blog that has served as my public sounding board for the past year or so.  I’ve spouted on a lot of things, enabling me to grow as a writer and test the blog-o-waters.  My conclusion: focus.  I need to focus.

So, my atheist and religious friends, this blog will dye a slow death.  I’ll remove it from the Atheist Blogroll (great blogroll for those of you interested) and hope that those of you who may be interested in my writing will follow me to my new blogs.  Here are the links again:

Nila E. White

Lorena Libre Mystery Tales

By all means, bookmark them!

Yours truly,

Nila E White

Not a scheduled feature

There are times when life just takes over, pulling you in every direction except the one you want to go in.  No matter.  My Aikido sensei would say, “Flow with the energy, follow the path.”

Yeah, what-ever.  I haven’t even been able to go to an Aikido class this past week, putting me off kilter.  And, though I wrote heaps yesterday, the past week’s work was pretty dismal.  And, I haven’t been able to keep up with this blog (other than the previously scheduled tip).

This week will probably be the same.  I know it’s all about attitude and no one is forcing me to do what I do, so get with it, right?  Don’t make me come and wring your neck.

I will strive to be “a peaceful warrior” and stop fighting my life.

If you have life in you, you have access to the secrets of the ages, for the truth of the universe resides in each and every human being. ~ Morihei Ueshiba

Post note: I will be reading The Angel’s Game by Carlos Ruiz Zafron as soon as I finish all my other reading.  Very excited! :)

Putting on a new dress

I’ve changed the theme again.  This is a new one from WordPress.  I like it.  Let me know if you don’t and I’ll switch back.

The picture above was taken in my very own backyard by yours truly.  We have a rock field just behind our house that is full of bunnies.  Come spring, never fails, the coyotes come a huntin’…

Happy Hunting!

Let me add a nice, heaping side of racism to your plate

Argh, I got another racist remark thrown at me this past week.

Apparently, I look like a blank wall because folks have spouted all sorts of stuff to me.  Maybe there’s something in the water.  Or in the air.  I’m not sure.

I’d like to explore why this might be, but I really don’t have time today to write a long post delving into human motivations.  And, you probably don’t want to read it.  So I’ll just quote my friends, family, and strangers.

About four months ago, while discussing a local Asian market, a friend says to me:

I can’t stand all the Asians with their slanty eyes.  They are so pushy and rude.  They just barge right in front of you.

And you go every week to the Asian market exactly because…what?  Yes, Asian markets in and of themselves have their own culture and norms.  A culture that may be a little shocking to some, but what the hell does their slanty eyes have to do with it?  You go to local markets to experience that cultural difference!  And for the food!  Get over it.

About two months ago, a family member says to me:

It is not right.  They come here and refuse to act like us.  They are overrunning and changing our country.  I hate them.

We were discussing legal immigrants to New Zealand, and I’m like, Okay, and just how do you think the local Moaris (Polynesians that populated New Zealand about 800 years before the Europeans got there) thought when all those ships from the great white north descended upon them?  At the time, don’t you think they felt the exact same way?  Don’t you think they had hate in their hearts for all the changes your ancestors made to their little part of the world?  Might they still feel that way?

This past week, while discussing the illegal immigration problem, a complete stranger says:

I won’t hire ‘em anymore.  They stole my equipment.  They don’t have the same morals as we do.

I’m all for enforcing the current laws in regards to illegal immigration, and especially for fining employers for knowingly hiring illegal immigrants.  And this dude and I were talking about just those laws when he made this statement.  It wasn’t like, I won’t hire ‘em anymore because it’s illegal and wrong, and that it lowers workers wages.  Oh no.  It’s like, I won’t hire ‘em anymore because I didn’t benefit from the relationship.

Please.  Don’t bitch and moan about the illegals doing illegal activities when you illegally hire them.  “They” do have the same morals as you do, buddy.  You should have made sure they were legal before hiring them.  But then, you’d have to pay them a living wage.  Idiot.

Life, in general…

I’m a working fiend at the moment.  Since I’ve been back from my trip to New Zealand, I have only had one full day off.    Not cool.

Ah well, nobody said life was easy.

I don’t have time for a full post but I do want to write about something that has been plaguing me for the past few months – racism.  In all its varied forms.  Even when it’s an intended compliment…

Your skin goes a lovely brown.  Not that horrible Moari brown.

What the fuck?

What do you say to something like that?

Stay tuned…

Geography of Sex

I can’t believe I’ve neglected this blog for so long.  But I have an excuse.  I’m trying to work while on vacation in another country AND maintain another blog.

Excuses…excuses…

Anyway, saw this on the boob-tube while waiting for dinner (or something).

Space, Place, and Sex: Geographies of Sexualities (Why of Where)

Apparently, the authors are Kiwis.  As Kiwis are generally ignored in the rest of the world, I thought I’d announce the new book here on my blog.

No, I haven’t read it.  The two gals interviewed on the boob-tube seemed intelligent and serious about the topic so I imagine that the book is too.  Anyway, the news article had the words Geography and Sex in the same sentence.  I figured geography is a keen topic of mine, and sex sells…so…why not a blatant sexual post to get readers back to this site? ;)

I’ll be back in the states and blogging daily by March 20th.

Later,

tmso
